Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
Whilst earlier BMW engines had issues with ignition coils, they are not a problem in most later engines.
In modern BMWs, ignition coils transform the low voltage from the car’s battery (usually 12 volts) into the high voltage (up to several thousand volts) required to create an electric spark, and then send the high voltage to the spark plugs.
The best way to determine fitment compatibility of an ignition coil is to match the BMW part numbers from the catalogue. This can be done by decoding your vehicle’s VIN in a BMW EPC (electronic part catalogue.)
If you don’t have access to an EPC, provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.
Ignition coils are often interchangeable between engine codes and families.
