The main issue with BMW’s lightweight sumps—made from either aluminium or plastic—is that they are prone to under-vehicle impact damage.
It is worth also noting for plastic sumps: when completing an oil change, take care undoing the plastic sump plug—the drive recess is easily damaged with rough use.
What is the part's function?
The primary function of the sump is store the engine oil. In addition to that, it also plays a role in dissipating heat from the engine.
How to determine fitment compatibility
Each model generation will typically have one sump for each engine type, though there can be different variants—especially between two-wheel drive and xDrive vehicles.
