Common issues & diagnosis

Sunroofs aren’t a major problem in most BMWs but we do sell them infrequently. The main mechanical issue with BMW sunroofs is that the cables can snap or malfunction—this is a particularly bad problem with E70 X5s.

The drive motors aren’t inbuilt, so when they fail they can easily be replaced.

What is the part's function?

Sunroofs provide light and ventilation. BMW sunroofs will typically have a separately operated blind and glass.

In most of BMW’s model generations the sunroof has an inbuilt wind deflector and is deliberately designed to minimise cabin wind whilst still providing maximal ventilation.

How to determine fitment compatibility

There can be multiple, non-exchangeable types of sunroof within any given model generation. This can be to account for headlining colour, amongst other factors.

To determine fitment compatibility of a sunroof for your vehicle, we recommend matching the assemblies’ BMW part numbers from the catalogue, along with the colour of the blind.

Provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.

Interchangeability between models

There is some interchangeability of sunroofs between sister models, but they’re mostly unique due to needing to shape to the roof of the car.
