Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about this part type, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
Both sunroof motors and roof function centers do fail in BMWs, which is mainly caused by water getting into the roof lining through the sunroof. The water usually builds up if the seals are leaking and/or the sunroof drains are clogged (which are are designed to carry water that gets in through the seals down the side pillars and out of the car.)
Most sunroofs will have two drive motors. These motors each drive the blind and glass separately.
Roof function centers control the sunroof and interior lighting, and in many cases are also incorporated into the vehicle’s SOS/emergency system.
Sunroof motor fitment
Sunroof motors are very generic and usually the same for glass and blind. If you provide us with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN we can check our stock for a compatible motor.
Roof switches fitment
Roof switches are much more difficult to match/fit as they have firmware installed and are programmed to work the vehicle’s emergency & safety systems. The only way we’ve been able to successfully match roof switches is to match the part number physically on the corresponding units, which requires the customer removing the unit from their vehicle.
Sunroof motors are highly interchangeable, whereas roof function centers are not interchangeable in our experience.
