Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about this part type, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
Low pressure fuel pump: The LPFP can fail due to wear, electrical issues or fuel contamination. Symptoms of failure include difficulty starting, engine sputtering, or a loss of power.
High pressure fuel pump: HPFP failures are known issues in certain BMW models. Symptoms include reduced engine power, rough idling and difficulty starting. Failures can be due to mechanical wear, manufacturing defects or contamination.
Low pressure fuel pump: The in-tank fuel pump, or low-pressure fuel pump (LPFP), is responsible for delivering fuel from the fuel tank to the engine’s fuel injection system. In port systems the LPFP will send fuel directly to the fuel rail, but in direct injection systems it will send it via the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP.)
High pressure fuel pump: The HPFP, used in direct injection systems, takes fuel from the LPFP and pressurises it to very high levels (often thousands of PSI), and then sends it the fuel rail, from where it is distributed to the fuel injectors.
Low pressure fuel pump: Each model will have at least two types of low-pressure fuel pump, for petrol and diesel. But they will typically also have additional types for different engines.
We will be able to find a compatible match by decoding your vehicle’s VIN number.
High pressure fuel pump: High-pressure fuel pumps belong to engine type, rather than the model, so there will always be a few different types within each model.
We will be able to find a compatible match by decoding your vehicle’s VIN number.
Low pressure fuel pump: Within the sedan/coupe/wagon models there is some interchangeability between models, but there is less once you get into the SAV/SACs.
High pressure fuel pump: There is a lot of interchangeability between models within the same generation, especially with alike/similar engines.
Find Genuine Used BMW Fuel Pumps
A reliable fuel pump is essential for maintaining optimal performance in your BMW, ensuring that your engine receives the right amount of fuel at the correct pressure. We offer a wide selection of high-quality BMW fuel pumps to suit various models.
The fuel pump is a critical component of your BMW’s fuel system, responsible for transferring fuel from the tank to the engine at the necessary pressure. There are two main types of fuel pumps found in BMW vehicles:
- In-tank fuel pump: This type of pump is located inside the fuel tank and is designed to efficiently supply fuel to the engine. If your vehicle is struggling with fuel pressure issues, an in-tank fuel pump BMW replacement may be required.
- High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP): Modern BMWs, particularly those with direct injection engines, are equipped with a BMW high-pressure fuel pump that ensures precise fuel delivery under varying driving conditions. If your engine is misfiring, stalling, or experiencing power loss, a faulty HPFP could be the cause.
Fuel pump failure can lead to serious performance issues, so it’s crucial to identify early warning signs and replace the pump before it leads to a breakdown. Common symptoms include:
- Difficulty starting the engine or stalling
- Loss of power, especially during acceleration
- Unusual whining or humming sounds from the fuel tank
- Poor fuel efficiency
- Check engine light indicating fuel system issues
If you notice any of these symptoms, it may be time to consider a BMW fuel pump replacement.
The BMW fuel pump replacement cost can vary depending on the model, fuel pump type, and whether you choose an OEM or aftermarket part. In general, replacing an in-tank fuel pump is more affordable than a high-pressure fuel pump, as HPFPs are more complex and require precise engineering.
When evaluating the BMW fuel pump price, it’s important to choose a high-quality part that ensures longevity and performance – while budget-friendly options are available, investing in a genuine fuel pump can prevent future breakdowns and costly repairs.
